Newt Gingrich declares World War III

No, you aren't having a bad dream. Newt's back with a "bang."

David Postman reports that Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III. Gingrich wants Bush to go to Congress in September and declare this.

Gingrich is "very worried" about Republicans losing seats this fall. Recognizing WW III is important for military and political reasons.

This is World War III," Gingrich said. And once that's accepted, he said calls for restraint would fall away. He also said.

There is a public relations value, too...public opinion can change "the minute you use the language" of World War III. The message then, he said, is "'OK, if we're in the third world war, which side do you think should win?"

Gingrich acknowledged that there is fall out because House and Senate Republicans "'forgot the core principle'" of the party and embraced Congressional pork. "Some of the guys," he said, have come down with a case of "incumbentitis."

I agree with Newt on that last point. However I strongly disagree on pursuing the WW III option. I think if Newt's motivation was "military" he'd be calling for Bush to speak to Congress NOW...It seems to be purely "political" to wait until September for Bush to speak to Congress about WW III.

Gingrich says that as of now Republicans "are sailing into the wind" in congressional campaigns. He said that's in part because of the Iraq war, adding, "Iraq is hard and painful and we do not explain it very well."

How about some refreshing truth? It's not the "explanations" about Iraq that need fixing...it's giving a "blank check" to incompetent leadership and then refusing to hold them accountable. Now, spin that one Newt!
