Quote of the Week

"Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity.

'Patriotism' is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say that by 'patriotism', I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one's own nation, which is the concern with the nation's spiritual as much as with its material welfare - never with its power over other nations.

Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one's country which is not part of one's love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship."

-Erich Fromm (1900-1980), U.S. psychologist

Rethink Afghanistan

"Why do we kill people who are killing people to show that killing people is wrong?" -- Holly Near

There is no excuse for the USA's continuous state of war and the willingness of our government to kill numerous civilians in any attempt to get one alleged "terrorist." If this is such an okay thing to do before long we may see our own police departments stop negotiating during hostage situations and just kill everyone involved no matter how innocent. That would be what Ward Churchill described as a "chickens coming home to roost."

Randal Amster has written a beautiful essay--Empire of the Sunset. Americans should insist that our government stop the imperialist corporate wars and actually create a government that protects flesh and blood people instead of corporate profits.

The American dream is lost due to our bloated and growing military budget that remains "untouchable." Our corporate owned Congress insists on protecting corporate profits and cutting vital domestic programs which are already slashed to the bone.
