I've placed calls to three different realty companies. I am given the same information. Houses throughout Hampton Roads have depreciated. Three houses on my street are up for sale. The house next to me has been on the market for 6 months. The owner is simply trying to get what they still owe on the mortgage. It's not selling.So the Portsmouth city assessor Alephia Bryce thinks that our home have "appreciated." They have my home overvalued. So the citizens of Portsmouth who decide to fight this abuse of power are going to have to take their valuable time to go down to City Hall and appeal the process.
How in the world can any honest assessor try to raise our home values in this real estate market is beyond me. It's definitely a travesty. When government officials attempt to scam the public they are supposed to serve there should be consequences. Hopefully, Portsmouth's city council will take the time to look into this matter. What are our city officials drinking?

If Portsmouth is like Chesterfield County, they are using stats from 2006 for their assessment.
Every citizen should file an appeal and swamp their office.
